(KWES) - As part of National Teen Driving Safety Week, the Texas Department of Transportation is re-introducing the "Five For Drive" campaign to keep young drivers safe.

TxDOT says state and national laws are not doing enough to protect drivers who are new to the roads.

So "Five For Drive" is a campaign to lower crash rates for teens by giving parents five things to speak to their teens about before they get behind the wheel.

"Buckling up, only having one passenger, not speeding, not drinking and driving and the one that's most prevalent these days is no cellphone. Make sure they're following the rules all the time and you do that by opening up a dialogue and having a good conversation with them. Also making sure they know you're a safe place to come back too," said Sonja Gross with Amarillo TxDOT.

TxDOT says these five rules give parents the resources to speak with their children about safe driving practices in a conversation that could potentially save lives.
