Shooting involving MPD: Person who fled traffic stop did not have a weapon

At 1:06 a.m. on Wednesday, MPD officers conducted a traffic stop in southwest Midland, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

MIDLAND, Texas — Midland Police Department conducted a traffic stop at 1:06 a.m. on Wednesday, which resulted in a shooting involving police, according to the City of Midland. An update as of 2:34 p.m. on Wednesday from the City of Midland says that the person who fled the traffic stop did not have a weapon, as initially reported.

In response to the person fleeing, an officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the driver sustaining a gunshot wound to the back. The injured driver was promptly transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The driver is still being treated as of 2:34 p.m. on Wednesday.

As for all officer-involved shootings, Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation into the matter. In accordance with MPD's policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
