Upton County agrees to improve website accessibility following Department of Justice investigation

The DOJ found that the website failed to provide equal access to critical election information for people with vision or manual disabilities.

UPTON COUNTY, Texas — The United States Department of Justice investigated Upton County for violating Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and found that Upton County maintained an inaccessible election website, according to a press release from the United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Texas.

The release further stated that the DOJ found that the website failed to provide equal access to critical election information for people with vision or manual disabilities.

As part of the settlement agreement, Upton County committed to making all current and future online election content accessible to individuals with disabilities.

An independent auditor will be hired to evaluate the website’s accessibility as well as solicit comments and requests from visitors and users.
