SONORA - A last minute plea deal lands a Fort Stockton man behind bars for the rest of his life.
32 year-old David Michael Meyers entered a guilty plea on Monday morning for the shooting death of Drew Slater, which ensures Meyers will spend the rest of his life in jail with no chance of parole.
Prosecutors tell NewsWest 9, the life sentence was handed out before jury selection was set to begin.
Even though Meyers pleaded guilty to capital murder, the state waived the death penalty because of his extensive psychological history.
The shooting happened back in October of 2008 in a Fort Stockton neighborhood when Meyers shot Slater several times.
Meyers took off in the victim's truck and was arrested the next day in Midland after using one of Slater's credit cards.
The District Attorney tells NewsWest 9, Slater's family was in favor of the plea deal.
