Odessa City Council provides update on Interstate 20 Project, sports complex construction

Once complete, the I-20 Widening Project will include additional main lanes and more. The land the sports complex will be built on was signed off by both parties.

ODESSA, Texas — During a meeting Tuesday, Odessa City Council provided an update on the Interstate 20 Widening Project and the construction of the Odessa Sports Complex.

The I-20 Widening Project is projected to be fully open to traffic in 2028, while the start of construction on the sports complex is hopefully projected for early spring of 2025.

I-20 Widening Project

The project broke ground in May of 2024.

The hope is the new and improved road will provide more safety and security for motorists driving through Midland-Odessa.

The project includes additional main lanes, new interchanges, ramp reconfiguration and conversion of two-way frontage roads to a one-way operation.

With the widening, the City of Odessa needs to move utilities to accommodate the project.

This adds nearly $500,000 to the cost of the project, but the city said the Texas Department of Transportation will reimburse those costs.

Odessa Sports Complex

In late February, a ground breaking was held for the Odessa Sports Complex.

In an update at Tuesday's city council meeting, city leaders say the land the complex will be built on is now signed off by both parties.

The 100-acre land is on Faudree Rd. near Yukon Rd.

The land was donated by Larry Bell and his family. Larry Bell said he wants the new complex to be in honor of his late daughter, Amy.

City Councilman Steven Thompson said after Tuesday's meeting city leaders hope to start the project in early spring of 2025.
