STANTON, Texas — The 11th annual Bustin' for Badges Clay Shoot is well underway in Stanton, Texas.
The event takes place at Windwalker Farms in Martin County and it brings the entire community out for a time when law enforcement goes from busting criminals to busting clays.
"It is one of the largest clay shoots, but more importantly, it's actually the largest law enforcement fundraiser in the entire country," said Vice President of Bustin' for Badges Steve LeSueur.
Eleven years ago, a group of law enforcement officers came together to find the best way to raise money.
"We started Bustin' for Badges about 11 years ago, and we haven't looked back," LeSueur said. "I mean, it's just it's been awesome. It's just got bigger, bigger every year. It's a wonderful thing, and all the money that we make from this event goes back to the community."
All the money raised is split between Midland PD, Odessa PD, Ector and Midland County Sheriff's Offices. Its then used to fund multiple initiatives like the bomb squad, the canine program, the drone program and more, all thanks to the everyday Joe.
"We start working on this usually early spring, late winter," LeSueur said. "We open up the registrations. It's very simple. People start registering, they come out and they shoot."
The three-day event gives people a chance to see officers in a different light and a relaxed environment. LeSueur said most time when people come in contact with police, it's under negative circumstances.
"It's under traffic stops, sometimes it's under some type of call for service," he said. "This time it's different, now we're actually serving you guys. It's just so much fun."
Last year the event raised $540,000 and while slots to shoots are full, the hosts recommend you still stop by and enjoy the festivities.
