The lights shine bright in McKinney Park for the Starbright Village Tree Lighting

NewsWest 9 spoke with the deputy director of Odessa Parks & Recreation on what went into the Starbright Village Tree Lighting.

ODESSA, Texas — The lights shined bright Thursday night over in Odessa as the city kicked off the holiday season with their annual Starbright Village Tree Lighting.

People were able to get into the Christmas spirit at McKinney Park as the tree lit up the night, along with other festive light displays, Christmas carols sung by local students and the Starbright Casitas Farmers Market.

This is no ordinary lighted display, there's over 300 lights, making it one of the largest display of holiday lights in the Permian Basin. This is all thanks to the Odessa Parks and Recreation Department.

"About a month and a half to get everything erected. All hands on deck," Deputy Director of Odessa Parks & Recreation John Rogers said. "Our entire department is working from all day every day. So it's very gratifying to see so many families out here, all the smiles and everybody getting into the Christmas spirit."

The lights stay on at Starbright Village all thanks to generous donations made by the community.

"Donation goes back into Starbright Village," Rogers said. "We do our best to refurbish a piece and half a new piece every year. So it goes one-hundred percent back."

The lights will be on every night from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Jan. 2.

You have the option to drive through the display or you can get your steps in and walk your way through it.
