Fort Stockton's KFST Station spreads diversity throughout the station

KFST Station plays country and western music with an English host throughout the day and music from Mexico with a Spanish-speaking host at night.

FORT STOCKTON, Texas — For a lot of us, getting in the car also means turning on the radio to listen to some tunes or catch the news.

While most are either in English or Spanish, radio station KFST in Fort Stockton serves both communities on the same frequency.

KFST Station has quite the fanbase. It is independently owned and right on the edge of Fort Stockton.

KFST was established back in 1954.

During the day, you'll hear country and western music with an English host.

At night, a diverse playlist of music from Mexico with a Spanish-speaking host.

KFST Station Owner Ken Ripley says he loves the diversity of the station.

Melissa Vital is the station's evening DJ who has an audience that expands across Crane, McCamey, Coyanosa and of course Fort Stockton.

Some of Vital's loyal listeners come from the prison outside of Fort Stockton.

Many of her listeners even like to send her artwork to show their appreciation to her.

"For me its very beautiful, very beautiful," Vital said. "They have all the details for me."
