ABILENE, Texas — A giraffe died at the Abilene Zoo Wednesday, the zoo said in a press release.
Her name was Baby Giraffe Zahara and she was born on July 20.
The Abilene Zoo said she died after suffering from a leg fracture, but the cause of the injury is undetermined.
The medical team on site tried to perform emergency care on Baby Zahara, however, despite the strong efforts, she passed away.
“We are devastated by this tragic loss,” said Robert Trejo, the general curator for the Abilene Zoo. “Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate the overwhelming support and love shown for Zahara since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection to her, especially her primary zookeepers.”
The zoo said in a press release that Baby Zahara was a "precious member" of their "giraffe herd." Baby Zahara had a playful and spirited personality.
"As we mourn the loss of Zahara, we are reminded of the challenges that come with the care of such magnificent animals," the release stated. "The zoo will continue to monitor the remaining members of the giraffe herd, ensuring their safety and health. We thank the public for their understanding during this difficult time and appreciate the outpouring of support for our team and the animals we care for."
