Proclamation made for late Mike Canales, second Hispanic man to serve on Odessa City Council

Canales was elected to city council in 1972, but passed away due to cancer a couple months later.

ODESSA, Texas — The City of Odessa made a proclamation Tuesday night for the late Mike Canales, the second Hispanic man to ever serve on Odessa City Council. The announcement was made at the Odessa City Council meeting.

Mike Canales was elected to city council back in 1972, but died a couple months later due to cancer.

A proclamation was made back in March of 2018 for Mike Canales to honor his service. It was given to Mike Canales' family, but the proclamation was lost.

On Tuesday night, the city was able to rededicate the day to Mike Canales and find the proclamation once again.

"I remember him when I was little and how much love he had for his children and how he took care of us," said Mary Canales, Mike Canales' daughter. "Then when he became a city councilman, I remember him running for it and [I remember him] running around giving out flyers for him and how he wanted to be elected to serve the city of Odessa."

Mike Canales also served as president of Odessa Lions Club and was present for the groundbreaking of University of Texas Permian Basin and Odessa College.
