ANDREWS, Texas — Mira Vera has been the owner of Home & Supply Hitch'N Post for the past two years.
"We are always right here at 1504 North Main Andrews, Texas," Vera said. "God told me that give people something to hitch on to, to stay connected to which is where we got our motto 'where friends gather'."
This gathering spot inside the yellow two-story building is a one stop shop for everything you need from office and school supplies to gifts for that special someone.
"Well it actually started as office supplies and as I started with office supplies then God started telling me you need to put a little bit more and it grew from there," Vera said.
For Vera, an idea grew right outside the Hitch'N Post doors and on the corner of her street.
"I just told my brother which he jumped on board with me I said I just want to put a box over here in the corner and all we wanna do is fill it up," Vera said. "We want to fill it up with non perishables it doesn’t have to be just food. Sometimes we put toiletries in there. Because those are some of those things that you can’t buy with food stamps and sometimes you just don’t have enough money."
Since the blessing box went up, it has constantly been filled with food left by people in the community, following the words written on the shelves inside, "Take What You Need" and "Leave What You Can."
"Andrews people rock! They are so amazing because not only do I give I have many many people that support this box and without them it wouldn’t be going on for the last two years so I can’t even take the whole credit for that," she said. "I just supply the box and they are the ones that keep doing it and keeping it up and making it work and keeping it going. I’ve had people come in from out of town that have handed me money and just say please fill up your box."
For some who pass by it on the street it may just be a box, but thanks to one woman for many who open the door in need, it's a blessing.
"It makes me feel very humbled because I’ve been on the other side of that I’ve been in the shoes where I’ve needed I’ve been in the other side where I didn’t have because I was a single mom and I was trying to make it pay day to pay day or moment by moment," Vera said. "I’ve been in that shoe and I know how that feels. So it’s good to know that I can pay it forward and I can help someone else and if I can inspire some one to do that then I’m very humble. There is so much need sometimes people don’t think there is needs but there is need."
