MIDLAND, Texas — Everyone deserves a little holiday cheer, even if someone isn’t in the best position when the calendar turns to December.
That is why the Student Council at Midland High took part in their annual Winter Wishes tradition.
During Winter Wishes, students can fill out a form and request a gift that either they want or they want to give to someone close to them, along with their reasons why.
After Student Council gets all of the requests, they sift through each and every one of them and find the best ones to grant.
“We have a ton of different gifts here, we have laptops, cameras, a sewing machine and just tons of different goodies for different students,” Midland High senior Micaela Delgado said.
Student Council will go from classroom to classroom toting a wagon filled with gifts, knocking on doors and announcing they had a gift for the student inside.
Once they received their gift, the student could either open the gift right there or wait until they were home.
It’s the joy that springs on the faces of the students that makes the Student Council do what they do.
“I just really wanted to be involved with the school and have a deeper connection with students and just be behind the scenes making this kind of Christmas magic happen,” Delgado said.
One of the students who received a gift was sophomore Alexis Dunlap.
She filled out a request asking for a sewing machine to replace the old one that had broke.
While she wishes to have a career in modeling sometime in her future, she also has a very important reason for asking for a sewing machine.
“I've been secretly making a dress for her when she turns 20, because she's going to be moving to a good college, and I want the dress to be finished by then,” Dunlap said.
