MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - Those celebrating Christmas across the Permian Basin can open presents and enjoy their tamales in peace thanks to the dedicated service of the men and women in blue.
Officers are on duty 365 days a year with no option of shutting down for Christmas, making it business as usual.
“Really, it doesn’t feel any different than another day,' Sgt. Brandon Blake, Ector County Sheriff’s Office, said. "I have known for months in advance that I would be working Christmas.”
Sgt. Blake started his day stopping a couple in a truck that looked like they needed some help.
Already stressed from chasing their lost dog, they were a little upset to see the lights.
“Like crap, way to ruin it more. When I am looking for my dog way to ruin Christmas more,” Sarah Dominguez said.
Sgt. Blake was unable to find the dog but notified all patrol officers to be on the lookout.
Continuing his patrol, Sgt. Blake found a car full of children with their mother and decided to hand out teddy bears the officer keeps in the back of his car.
According to Blake, each unit carries the bears in case a call involves kids that are visibly upset and remind the children the officers are there to protect and serve.
“We are actually here to help them out,” Sgt. Blake said.
