Blessings in a backpack: Odessa realtors join forces to provide the homeless with daily essentials

On Monday, EXP Realty partnered with the Odessa Board of Realtors to provide 200 backpacks full of essentials to the homeless community.

ODESSA, Texas — Homelessness is a growing issue in Odessa, but many organizations in the community are coming together to help combat it.

Connie Coots, the CEO of Odessa Board of Realtors, talked about the love she has for the city and being able to give back.

"As the Board of Realtors, we build homes, and we believe [the backpacks] will help brighten the community," said Coots.

On Monday, the Odessa Board of Realtors teamed up with EXP Realty to provide 200 backpacks full of basic life essentials to homeless individuals that might not have access to them.

The backpacks included items like a poncho, first aid kit, gloves, a hat, socks, a blanket, a thermal cup, flashlights, toothbrushes and so much more!

Each item was carefully selected to meet the needs of those who need it most and then placed inside a bright neon backpack.

One realtor for EXP Realty, Yvonne Rosas, explained the positive atmosphere at the event.

"When they come in and get their blessing backpacks, it puts a smile on their face," Rosas said. "One lady passing by said, 'It's so nice to see everybody smiling.' Moments like that are just amazing.

For the Odessa Board of Realtors and EXP Realty, the true gift is being able to give back.

“If you work in your community and go to church here, you should also give back," Rosas said. "Whether it’s through tithing or volunteering — like we do monthly at the West Texas Food Bank and Meals on Wheels. Realtors are working together to serve the community as a whole. That’s why I partnered with other realtors, and they came through."

This day of service is a reminder that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. With every backpack handed out, the real estate agents hope to continue building a stronger, more caring community in the Permian Basin.
