City of Kermit under boil water notice

For the past few hours, Kermit has been dealing with a water issue. Now, the city is under a boil water notice.

KERMIT, Texas — Water issues plaguing the City of Kermit on Sunday has led to a boil water notice to go into effect, according to a press release from the city.

On the City of Kermit's Facebook page, a few hours ago, they made the public aware that there was a water issue and that two of three water supply pumps had to be restarted.

Then, as of 4 p.m., Kermit Mayor David Holbrook said all pumps were running and tanks are filling. However, one tank level switch was bad and showing full. Mayor Holbrook said repairs were then underway.

As of 5:22 p.m. on Sunday, the city informed NewsWest 9 that the city would go under a boil water notice. It is all due to a pressure loss from mechanical failure issues.

Below is information from a press release from the city on the boil water notice:

"Due to pressure loss from mechanical failure issues on Sunday, August 18, 2024, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the City of Kermit, PWS TX2480001, to notify affected customers to boil their prior to consumption until further notice. Due mechanical failures of monitoring system, the water pressure fell below the required 20 psi in the distribution system. We have identified the issue and are working diligently to resolve the issue.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requires water-providing entities to notify customers to boil water in certain instances. Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all affected customers should follow these directions.

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and for making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source. When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, City of Kermit officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes. Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, we will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice.

Questions or concerns may be directed to the City of Kermit at 432-586-3468." - Mike Arismendez, Kermit City Manager
