MIDLAND, Texas —
The Trash-off on Saturday was a friendly competition where employees from the City of Midland and Midland County competed to see who can pick up the most trash.
The competition is also meant to show the community that the city and county are willing to work together on issues such as littering in Midland.
"We feel that it is just something that is really good for the city and the county to really be engaging with each other. And working with each other to show residents that we care about this community, and we want to make a difference in this community," said Dianne Anderson, Midland County commissioner for Precinct 4.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said it’s important to also encourage the community to not be content with litter being around.
“I think we’re all seeing that there’s a litter problem around Midland," Mayor Blong said. "We see it on the roads coming into the community and we see it throughout our community. So, we really are trying to attack that problem and we believe that the best way to do that is to get people out there mobilized and ready to pick it up and to create a culture in our community where trash and litter are not going to be acceptable.”
It’s a goal that the county can get behind as well.
“We want our residents to help us clean up the community and so we need to show them that we’re willing to do that as well,” said Commissioner Anderson.
Employees cleaned up the west and east side of South Garfield St., starting from West Industrial Ave. down to the Midland County Horseshoe.
