ODESSA, Texas — The Firecracker Fandango, which the City of Odessa puts on every year on the 4th of July, may have a different location next year. The event is usually held in the downtown area.
However, this year, it wasn't a pretty scene when the fireworks show hurt a local business.
Images Ink, a printing shop in Odessa, received roof damage from the fireworks and now they want something to be done about it.
City of Odessa is investigating and has three roofers looking at the damages. The cost for the repairs are between $70,000 and $90,000.
The city is working with insurance companies to see how Images Ink's roof can be paid for.
"We will be moving [the Firecracker Fandango]. This is one of those events we'll have a private contractor doing it," said John Beckmeyer, Odessa city manager. "The city won't be involved with Fandango anymore. We'll help private contractor they'll be able to use our offices for a base, things like that, but the city wont have responsibility. Of course we need to be able to find this new location, if you remember part of the thing that made the fireworks really bright they didn't go very high we believe that's part of the problem that got the roof burned."
The city told NewsWest 9 that they require vendors, like the fireworks one in this case, to have insurance. The city is working with their insurance to assure they're responsible for the cost.
