Gifts of Hope kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Gifts of Hope advocates for breast cancer awareness during the month of October.

MIDLAND, Texas — Gifts of Hope kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an event Thursday.

The organization, a Women's health advocate, said breast cancer is on the rise. So, the event is a way to spread awareness about the dangerous disease breast cancer.

Gifts of Hope wants to empower women so they can be advocates for their health and know the importance of mammograms and early screening.

The Hope House, located next to a hospital, is a special place for women battling breast cancer to stay at. It is to help them avoid financial bills by cutting down on travel cost.

"Since 2010 we saved $1.7 million in hotel cost, and we have also provided financial assistance to the tune of $1.6 million for various cancer related cost; because cancer treatment is not cheap and whatever we can do to provide access that's our goal," said Clint Dickson, executive director of Gifts of Hope.

Gifts of Hope is hosting their big event "Pink the Park" at Centennial Park on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NewsWest 9's Crystal Crews will be there to emcee the event.
