HOWARD COUNTY, Texas — A piece of Texas history is in the backyard of Howard County.
A while back, Howard County commissioners approved a donation from the Alamo Letter Society to get a large bronze plaque that has the "Letter From The Alamo" written on it. The letter pleads for reinforcements and is one of the most notable pieces of literature in the English Language.
"The McNut family took a trip to The Alamo and their daughter was 13, [she] was reading [the] plaque in front of chapel in front of The Alamo and discussing about connections to Texas history. She made the statement. Its a shame people travel to San Antonio to see history, wouldn't it be neat to see in your own county," said Randy Johnson, Howard County judge. "For some reason the family kind of picked that up and it turned to Alamo Letter Society and their goal is to put one plaque in each of the 254 counties in Texas, and we were blessed to be on the front end of that."
The goal is to have each plaque serve as a symbol to future generations of Texans and remind them of their forefathers' fight for liberty, freedom and the armed resistance to oppression.
The plaque is now on display at the Howard County Courthouse.
