JROTC students from Midland ISD put American flags on veteran graves

The event by JROTC was meant to honor veterans and show appreciation for their service.

MIDLAND, Texas — JROTC students from Midland ISD went out to Fairview Cemetery in Midland on Thursday to place American flags on the graves of veterans to help honor them and show appreciation for their service.

All of this happening in the lead up to Veterans Day.

“I think it’s important that we pay respects to past veterans and just kind of know that they served our country and that we should pay respect to them,” said Makenzie Martinez, JROTC student from Midland High.

A little rainy weather wouldn’t deter the cadets either. If these brave men and women could brave the dangers of the battlefield, then the cadets could handle a little rain and wind.

"Well ROTC is all about doing things under any condition and I think it's important that we said we'd do it today and no matter if it's rain, shine, snow, windy, whatever, it's important that we do it today because we already committed to this and we're not gonna just bail out just because it's a little chilly," Martinez said.

This also makes for a good learning experience for the younger students.

“So a lot of the kids that came out here are freshman, they just joined ROTC this year," Martinez said.  "The [younger students] are learning to respect America as a country."

The flags are currently up at Fairview Cemetery and will remain there through at least Veterans Day weekend.
