MIDLAND, Texas — Almost one year since her niece, Siah Ashlyn Kearns, was hit and killed while on her electric skateboard, Con Suelo Duff still thinks about her life being cut too short.
However, Duff is grateful and thankful to the local community for rallying together for her family.
"Everyday is a remembrance of her nothing specific it’s just a remembrance everyday," Duff said. "We’re really grateful everything has been put together. I mean when it comes from counseling, to assistance, to children, fun donations, everything has been help."
Right on the corner of Raiz Dr. and Bandolier Dr. in Midland, Siah's neighborhood came together and put up a little free library in memory of her.
"Siah loved to read. So it’s a free donation you can donate, you can grab, it’s children books, adult books, Holy Bible, anything you need here," Duff said. "This makes us feel really great it’s the neighborhood pavilion parkway they donated this. [A] lady who lives here created this for Siah and everyone involved in the neighborhood even outside the neighborhood."
Siah's aunt cherishes this way of honoring her 14-year-old niece.
"I mean I just love how it shows 'In loving memory of Siah Ashlyn Kearns. Take a book. Leave a book.' I mean it’s just very nice what the whole community is doing for her. She’s great she was a loving, happy person. She’s always in our prayers, she was wonderful spirit I know she’s looking down watching all of us," Duff said. "It’s sad that she’s gone but not gone, but if this new year can prevent any other families [from] feeling sorrow or anything [just] everyone be careful out there."
