TEXAS, USA — On Monday evening, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit 21 miles west-southwest of Ackerly, northwest of Big Spring.
Many people felt the rumble as far as Midland, however.
Most of those folks were minding their own business at home when all around them started to shake.
"I was at the dinner table with my family, and my dad was on the couch. All of a sudden we're talking, and we feel something, we all just kind of look around and my dad's like, 'look at the lights,'" Ciena Gonzales said. "Our little bar lights were swinging back and forth [...] we didn't really know what it was at first.”
"I was watching the football game and my dog and cat were acting a little bit odd," Carla Long said. "They were kind of prancing and wanting to go outside."
“I felt like somebody hit my bed. I was in my bed and thought somebody hit my bed," Lauren Hayward said. "I thought the kids were under the bed. They were not. It was a very strange feeling."
All that shaking came as a shock to everyone, especially since earthquakes aren't exactly common in West Texas.
“At first, I didn't know what it was whenever it started. Then all of a sudden, my house started really shaking, and then it went away," Tom Selman said. "Everybody kept asking, 'what do you think that was?' I said, 'it had to be an earthquake.'"
"I was kind of like, what was that, because I moved and it moved with me. I was like, I didn't make it move like that," Amber Serrano said. "I looked and everything was just moving there for a while. It kind of got me a little lightheaded, but it kind of caught me off guard.”
Of course, this wasn't the first time an earthquake has made West Texas rumble.
For some, it wasn't their first rodeo with an earthquake, but many felt that Monday's quake was just a little crazier than ones in the past.
"I think it was the strongest one we felt to this day since I've been here," George Sisneros said. "The way it felt, I haven't felt my bed move like that or seen the fans in the house move stuff like that before.”
However, many people can agree that they don't want to feel another earthquake like that for a long time.
“I hope we don't ever have a big one next time," Serrano said. "I just hope that was probably the biggest we'll ever have that is what I'm hoping."
