Midland ISD conducts safety training exercises at Midland High

The emergency action plan includes five steps: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.

MIDLAND, Texas — On Wednesday, Midland ISD conducted several law enforcement training exercises at Midland High School that included safety drills with other agencies.

The safety drills involved realistic sounds of gunfire and armed officers on the campus with weapons.

The emergency action plan includes five steps: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.

Wednesday night's exercise was to make sure everyone knew the protocol and could execute it should they see an emergency situation.

"We practice all these procedures because the mind goes through denial and deliberation while your thinking something weird is happening and what am I gonna do and we don't want it to be a long time before people get to the decisive action phase," said Tim Allen, emergency management coordinator for MISD. "So we train these, we talk about them, and plan for them and then that way we can respond much more quickly for life safety reasons."

The training exercise will take place again Thursday night, July 30 and July 31.
