MIDLAND, Texas — Once the Legacy High School FFA heard about the fires in the Panhandle, they sprung into action and began collecting donations on a short notice to send up north.
“It made me feel good as a FFA student being able to do something that not everyone sees as adults being able to do," said Carson Awbrey, a junior at Legacy High School and a FFA student. "And it just makes me feel better to know that I’m getting to help those people who are in need and feeling the devastation in the panhandle.”
They gathered donations on Thursday and even received monetary donations that they used to purchase even more supplies for both cattle and people. Things like fencing supplies, horse and cattle feed, first aid supplies and paper towels.
Despite only having one day to collect, they managed to collect five trailers worth of donations and they left Friday morning to go deliver them.
"I mean it means a lot to us but I know that it means even more for the people that we're able to donate to," said Lindsey Lamkin, an AG teacher at Legacy High School. "It feels really great to see the community be able to do that and come together, but it's amazing to see whenever they get there today, being able to donate and see all of the disaster that's happened and being able to contribute to the relief effort."
The FFA students took an empathetic look at what was going on in the Panhandle and knew that they wanted to help.
“It can happen to you and you’d obviously want people to help you out and so whenever I heard about it I was trying to think of some ways we can help,” said Aliya Loyd, a sophomore at Legacy High School and a FFA student.
If the fire is still going on when the FFA teachers, who went to deliver donations, make it back home, Lamkin said they will probably get another round of donations for another trip. She said to keep an eye on Midland Legacy FFA's Facebook.
