MIDLAND, Texas — Christmas may be two months away, but the Salvation Army in Midland is already getting things ready for the season.
This includes rounding up volunteer bell ringers to help raise money, but the number of volunteers signing up just aren’t where they’d like yet.
Captain Robert Coriston of the Midland Salvation Army said ever since the COVID-19 pandemic they've had fewer volunteers than normal.
While donations to Salvation Army bell ringers might not seem like much, they’re more needed than you think.
"It's important for everything that we do. It helps fund everything that we do," Captain Coriston said. "It keeps us visible and it's just a great opportunity not just for us to raise the money for our programs but to see the community come together and support us and their fellow people of Midland."
That money isn’t just for the Salvation Army, it’s also meant to go back to the greater community.
“All of the money raised in Midland, stays in Midland," Captain Coriston said. "That goes for Odessa [as well]. If you give to a kettle in Odessa, the money stays in the community it was given in. Which is really important for people to know that they’re supporting their neighbors when they give to our kettles when they’re out there bell ringing.”
