Midland YMCA wants to address childcare issues in Midland through expansion

Midland YMCA believes the new facility will ease the burden on existing childcare issues.

MIDLAND, Texas — The Midland YMCA is one of the most popular and affordable after-school care facilities in the tall city, and they hope to keep up with the growing population.

“So as part of our strategic plan that we refreshed last summer, we identified the need to better serve our community," Dean Snidow, chairman of the board of the Midland YMCA, said. "And one of the ways we have gone about doing that is acquiring additional property to expand our services into not only a growing part of town, but it allows us to better utilize the facilities we currently have.”

That expansion in Northwest Midland is 25 acres and will be on the intersection of Avalon, Mockingbird and Golden Gate. The building will be dedicated to social and recreational activities.

The biggest point that they talked about at Friday's lunch and learn event was the need for more help.

“One of the things we're hoping to address with this property is the need for after school care in our community," Snidow said. "So this new location will allow us to free up 100 spots in the downtown branch while utilizing the infrastructure we have in the proximity in the corners of the northwest part of town.”

The YMCA also said they want to be a good neighbor as the city experiences such unprecedented growth and welcomes public opinion.

The YMCA hopes to get construction started sometime next year and they hope to have the facility up and running for after school care at least by Fall of 2024.
