Odessa American Legion honors veterans with reflective ceremony

The American Legion Post 430 paid tribute to veterans with a heartfelt ceremony celebrating their bravery, sacrifice and service.

ODESSA, Texas — On Monday. Nov. 11, we honor all veterans who have bravely served our country, both those still with us and those who have passed on. The American Legion in Odessa held a special ceremony in tribute to local veterans.

The ceremony was a time for reflection, storytelling and celebration - a moment to remember our progress and raise a toast to those who fought courageously for our freedoms.

American Legion Post 430 Commander, Tony Morgan, extended a heartfelt thank you to veterans near and far this Veterans Day, recognizing that, for each of them, service to their country has been a profound commitment.

“I served in the U.S. Army as a Patriot missile crew member,” Morgan said. “It meant everything to me because I was the only one in my family who joined the military. So, being able to give back to my country means a lot.”

Morgan reflected on the support the American Legion provided him during his transition from active duty to civilian life.

For Barbara Zimmerman, this Veterans Day carries a distinct memory close to her heart.

“This is my son,” she said, cradling an urn close to her chest. “He just passed away. He was an Army Ranger and did five tours in Iraq.”

Barbara Zimmerman’s son, Jack Zimmerman, came from a proud military family with generations of service in the Navy and Marines.

“The military was in his blood, and it meant everything to him,” Barbara Zimmerman said.

This legacy is why she devotes her time to supporting veterans however she can.

And others can, too.

There are many ways to make a difference in a veteran’s life.

“Talk to your uncles, your grandfather. Ask about their military history, your family’s history. Find out who served and get involved with the local VFW or American Legion Post,” Morgan added. “Any veteran organization—get involved because we need all veterans, young and old.”

On Monday, may we all remember that no duty is more urgent than expressing gratitude.

NewsWest 9 sends a heartfelt salute to all who have served. May we never forget.
