ODESSA, Texas — Good Friday is a day for grieving and reflecting for several people. It marks the day Christians believe Jesus was crucified.
For more than 15 years, the St. Mary's Church in Odessa has carried its tradition of re-enacting the biblical event.
On Friday, church devotees and community members witnessed the re-enactment of Jesus' crucifixion outside of the St. Mary's Church.
According to Deacon Bobby Wright, the actors included the school's youth (middle school and high school students). Nearly two dozens children volunteered their time to contribute to roles, such as Jesus Christ, Mary, John, guards and many more.
Deacon Wright said the students prepped weeks in advance for this event.
"It's always joyful to see the kids really get into it," Deacon Wright said. "These kids provide an example for the little ones because as they grew up in the church, they'll have their turn someday to do this."
Costume designer Rocio Bernial said some of the costumes were shared with Saint Mary's Central Catholic School. Plus, many items are reused depending on its wear and tear.
According to Bernial, the group of people that make the annual re-enactment possible continues to grow ever year. The children who become a part of the play are each assigned a role with their own designated costume.
This is one of the biggest plays for the church every year. Aiden Munoz is in middle school and this year he performed as John during the re-enactment. When asked if the practice sessions, costumes and everything involved in making the play possible was worth it, he said, "Yes, I'm going to look back at this someday. My parents are going to see this".
The commemoration and celebration continues at Saint Mary's Church. On Saturday, the church will celebrate Easter Vigil.
