UT Permian Basin opens new fitness court

On one side of the court, it has equipment to do body weight exercises and the other side has a fitness studio for yoga or dancing classes.

ODESSA, Texas — The University of the Permian Basin is helping its students get in shape!

On Thursday, UTPB opened up a new fitness court.

On one side of the court, it has equipment to do body weight exercises and the other side has a fitness studio for yoga or dancing classes.

It also has rings, places to jump, ways to do pull ups and there's also an app if you need ideas for exercising.

No matter what fitness level, there's a way to enhance the space.

"We know that space matters and people are looking for high quality of life which includes things to do and ways to stay healthy," said Dr. Becky Spurlock, senior vice president of student affairs for UTPB. "We have our walking trail adding this in campus means its easy to be able to add fitness opportunities and places to hang out."

UTPB was approached by the National Fitness Campaign and Blue Cross Blue Shield to create this project.

This has been a six to nine month process.

First, they had a base grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield and the National Fitness Campaign.

Then, they used student service fees to finish the project out by spending $150,000 as part of the grant.
