ODESSA, Texas — The Odessa Police Department is investigating a "suspicious death" of a 13-year-old child, who authorities say died due to fentanyl poisoning.

The incident happened in the 1900 block of E. 13th St. where officers found the child dead from a possible "overdose". The Homicide Unit is currently in charge of the case and have identified persons of interest.

"Due to the nature of overdose cases, it is likely to take some time for investigators to develop evidence sufficient to present to the Ector County Grand Jury," OPD said in a Facebook post.

An autopsy was conducted on the child and preliminary results say it was fentanyl poisoning. The next of kin has been notified.
