32-year-old Midlander sentenced to life for fatally stabbing ex-girlfriend 20 times

The state waived the death penalty in 32-year-old Raven Robert Rodriguez's case, according to the Midland County District Attorney's Office.

MIDLAND, Texas — Thirty-two-year-old Midlander Raven Robert Rodriguez was sentenced to life without parole on Wednesday for capital murder of his ex-girlfriend, according to the Midland County District Attorney's Office.

The capital murder charge stems from a case back on December 8, 2022, in the early morning hours.

According to a press release, Rodriguez broke into a Midland County hotel room where his ex-girlfriend Mariela Lozano was staying and chased her onto the balcony.

The release stated that Rodriguez then stabbed Lozano 20 times before fleeing the scene.

Surveillance footage of the scene shows Rodriguez breaking in to Lozano's hotel room and murdering her.

Later, Rodriguez was found by the Midland Police Department K-9 Unit and was arrested.

According to evidence gathered by MPD, it showed that Rodriguez and Lozano's relationship had a history of domestic violence. They were together for 13 years and had five children together.

The release further stated that the couple broke up several days before the murder.

The DA's office said the State of Texas waived the death penalty in Rodriguez's case in March of 2023.

Rodriguez will spend the rest of his life behind bars without being eligible for parole.
