Family confirms Odessa 'hit and run' victim's death

Alex Bingham, who was hit by an underaged drunk driver early Sunday morning has died after suffering serious bodily injuries.

ODESSA, Texas — Alex Bingham, a man who loved ones say was an amazing husband and father has died Wednesday morning after being hit by an underaged drunk driver on Sunday. 

According to a Facebook post from Bingham's cousin, "Alex had to undergo brain surgery as he had multiple skull fractures, a broken vertebra, a broken arm, and multiple other injuries.

A family member of Bingham told NewsWest 9 he died at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday. 

At approximately 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, the Odessa Police Department responded to a major accident where " a black Dodge Challenger hit a person then left the scene." 

Jose Contreras was arrested for intoxication assault with a vehicle causing seriously bodily injury and collision involving serious bodily injury. Both charges are classified as a third-degree felony.

According to Ector County jail records, he was booked on two surety bonds, totaling $30,000 ($15,000 for each charge). Contreras has since bonded out.

NewsWest 9 will provide an update when and if any added charges are brought against Contreras.
