Arrest made in connection to hit-and-run fatality in Midland on May 27

An initial altercation began outside La Cantina in Midland then escalated into the street where two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle.

MIDLAND, Texas — An arrest has been made in connection with a hit-and-run that led to a 20-year-old man's death in Midland on May 27, according to a press release from the City of Midland. The Midland Police Department have arrested 36-year-old Danny Paul Rodriguez.

According to the release, MPD responded to a collision involving a vehicle with a pedestrian on Florida Avenue on May 27.

The initial altercation began around 1:50 a.m. outside La Cantina at 200 E. Florida Ave. It then escalated into the street and resulted in two pedestrians being struck by a midsize maroon Cadillac SUV going eastbound.

20-year-old Sergio Alejandro Regino Valdez died in the accident. The other person hit by the SUV sustained serious injuries.

Following Valdez's death, MPD secured arrest warrants for Danny Rodriguez. 

A week and a half later, Rodriguez was arrested.

MPD released a report on the fatal accident:

“The SUV was traveling eastbound and appeared to be in both lanes of travel. The driver of the SUV never slowed for the subjects. A witness advised the SUV turned north after the collision occurred. The driver of the SUV fled the scene.” - Reports from Midland Police Department
