Hobbs man sentenced to 25 years in prison for cyberstalking and federal firearms offenses

37-year-old Guadalupe Antonio Navarrete was sentenced for possessing a firearm and ammunition, which was used in a 2022 murder of a woman.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — On Thursday, 37-year-old Guadalupe Antonio Navarrete, of Hobbs, NM., was sentenced to 25 years in prison followed by six years of supervised release for cyberstalking and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The firearm and ammunition was used in a 2022 murder of a woman, according to the United States Attorney's Office District of New Mexico.

According to a press release, court documents show that on November 18, 2022, the Lea County Sheriff's Office was called to Navarrete's residence in Hobbs because of an unwanted person on the premises.

When deputies arrived, they found a woman dead in the driver's seat of a vehicle. Deputies say she had a gunshot wound to the temple, according to the release.

After a weeks long investigation, deputies discovered that Navarrete sent multiple threatening messages and voicemails to the woman. One of the threats said he would "shoot her mere hours before she was killed", according to the release.

Investigators determined that Navarrete was sitting in the rear passenger seat of the woman's vehicle when he fired a gun through the front passenger headrest. That gunshot killed her.

On March 10, 2023, Navarrete pled guilty to cyberstalking resulting in life threatening bodily injury and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to the release.

As of March 21, 2024, Navarrete will be behind prison bars for 25 years.
