ODESSA, Texas — Ector County court records show that Michael "Spider" Gonzales, accused of murdering two Odessans in 1995, will be having his evidentiary hearing rescheduled for June.

At a court hearing in August of 2023, the 358th District Court established his evidentiary hearing to be scheduled for Jan. 22 of 2024.

As of Jan. 5, court records show that Gonzales' evidentiary hearing has been rescheduled for June 24, 2024.

In 1995, Michael "Spider" Gonzales was convicted of the murder of the two Odessans and was sentenced to death. An appeal lasted until 2009, when the charge and death penalty were both upheld. That same year, he was resentenced to death.

Gonzales was supposed to be executed in 2022, but was granted a stay of execution by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The stay was granted on the grounds of intellectual disability and newly discovered evidence.

A court hearing was held in May 2023 regarding Gonzales' IQ, which defense attorneys claim is lower than 70, below the threshold for execution.

The evidentiary hearing is scheduled for June 24, but that is subject to change.
