Odessa Police respond to two different crime scenes Monday night that turn out to be related

Raymundo Sanchez, 38, is charged with aggravated robbery and more, while Charles Whittington, 48, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

ODESSA, Texas — The City of Odessa said Tuesday that two men were arrested Monday night after two separate calls to local police turned out to be related.

At about 11 p.m. Monday night, the City says Odessa Police responded to 505 East 35th St. due to a gunshot victim.

Once Officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Raymundo Sanchez suffering from a gunshot wound in the lower part of his body.

While investigating the scene, the City says Odessa Police became aware of another crime scene in the 2700 block of Center Ave. involving 48-year-old Charles Whittington who reports that he was robbed in the area of Sanchez's residence.

According to an investigation, officers believed that Sanchez and an unknown subject robbed Whittington at gunpoint in the 2700 block of Center Ave. Once the robbery took place, investigators say Sanchez and another subject fled the scene North.

Whittington claimed that nothing was stolen during this incident, on the other hand, and instead of calling the police and reporting the incident, Whittington chose to search for Sanchez and the other subject.

Whittington found the two 30 minutes later walking in the 3500 block of North Muskingum Ave. and intentionally used his vehicle to chase the subjects.

The City says it was believed that Whittington struck the unknown subject, then the subject fled the scene.

Whittington did not choose to stay where he struck the unknown subject and instead drove his heavily damaged vehicle back home.

Sanchez told local police that an unknown person shot him while he was walking, but evidence did not support his statement. Sanchez later admitted that he shot himself at some point during the incident.

Both Sanchez and Whittington were arrested.

Sanchez was charged with aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and false reporting.

Whittington has been arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to the City of Odessa, Whittington's actions went far beyond what is acceptable for self-defense as per Chapter 9 of the Texas Penal Code.
