More details released after one person found dead at northeast Midland residence Tuesday

According to the City of Midland, the suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Samuel Omamogho. He was arrested on-site and later charged with murder.

MIDLAND, Texas — On Tuesday, May 21, around 5:43 p.m., Midland Police responded to a shooting incident in the 6700 block of Rio Bravo, according to a press release from the City of Midland.

According to the City of Midland, around 5:44 p.m., the Midland Police Department responded to the 6700 block of Rio Bravo due to a disturbance with weapons.

The release stated that upon arrival, "officers discovered a male kneeling in the roadway, holding a firearm, while a deceased male lay nearby."

Detectives at the scene reviewed camera footage, which depicted the suspect shooting at a residence and also shooting the victim in the roadway.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Samuel Omamogho, and was arrested on-site and later charged with murder.

The victim was reported as 41-year-old John Richard of Midland.

Trevor Deen, a neighbor, was just getting home right before the shooting started.

“I was looking at messages over on my phone for a few minutes before I walk in the house. And that's, you know, I was opening the door to get out and turning around and grabbing my bag and I could hear the shots," Deen said. "So I turned around and saw the, you know, what I believe to be the perpetrator.”

Deen said he lived a couple houses down from where the shooting happened, so he heard the shots pretty clearly and immediately took cover.

“If he would have seen me standing there and there wasn't a truck blocking me from his direct view, who knows what could’ve happen,” said Deen.

He did get to see officers apprehend the suspect, but Deen told his wife, who was out of town at the time, to not come home until he was sure everything was safe.

Deen said this experience just shows that everyone needs to be on alert regardless of where they are.

“This this can happen to anyone. It can even happen in safe areas, so keep your head on a swivel, always pay attention to what's going on around you and do your best to protect yourself and your family,” said Deen.

The investigation is ongoing.
