According to an arrest affidavit, a woman located at the Southgate Apartments called OPD saying her boyfriend had been shot.

That boyfriend was later identified as Montrell Jordan. The woman, her brother and Jordan stated two male subjects entered the apartment holding guns and began demanding items. Jordan said one of the suspects was wearing a black hoodie and the other a red hoodie. Jordan said the suspect in the black hoodie shot him.

Jordan had two apparent gunshot wounds to the abdomen and officers found spent shell casings on the ground inside the apartment.

The woman's brother said he knew one of the suspects by the name of Erik Avila and had known him for a long time.

Based on previous encounters with similar circumstances, OPD believed Avila was the suspect. Detectives showed the man a photo of Avila's ID card photo only and asked if he knew who he was, to which he said yes.

Detectives were also able to identify one of Avila's associates, Daryan Lee Benavidez, based on previous reports who had a similar physical stature as the description given by witnesses.

The woman was administered a photo lineup where she was able to identify Benavidez as the second suspect.

Witnesses say the two suspects entered the apartment shortly after the woman entered, therefore the front door was unlocked, and the two suspects did not have permission to enter the apartment.

Both have been booked into the Ector County Jail charged with burglary of habitation with the intend to commit another felony.

According to jail records, Avila and Benavidez both have $300,000 bonds.
