OPD warns of recent credit card theft at gas stations

Due to the covert way the skimmers are placed, these devices can be challenging to detect unless one remains vigilant.

ODESSA, Texas — The Odessa Police Department has sent out a warning Thursday in regards to credit and debit card skimmers discovered at local gas stations.

Skimmers are devices that read the magnetic stripe on cards when inserted into card readers. Skimmers collect sensitive information, including credit card numbers, expiration dates and cardholder names.

Due to the covert way the skimmers are placed, these devices can be challenging to detect unless one remains vigilant.

OPD further noted that skimmers are often accompanied by pinhole or hidden cameras. These cameras record the numbers entered on keypads. This allows thieves to exploit the captured data for personal use or sale.

When using a card to fuel a vehicle, follow these best practices: Either go inside the store or use a zip code instead of a PIN number at the pump. Additionally, pay attention to the security tape seal on the pump to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with.

If people suspect that they've fallen victim to one of these skimmer devices, promptly contact the bank, monitor the accounts and report any unauthorized transactions. Individuals with information about skimmer devices or their locations are encouraged to reach out to the Odessa Police Department at 432-335-3333 or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-3333-TIPS.
