Orlando Montanez arrested after officer-involved shooting in Big Spring

A Big Spring officer was shot after ordering Montanez out of his car. The officer returned fire before taking cover but the suspect then escaped on foot.

BIG SPRING, Texas — 42-year-old Orlando Montanez was located at approximately 8:25 a.m. by Big Spring PD after being involved in an officer-involved shooting, according to a Big Spring Police Department press release. 

On May 14, at approximately 1:50 a.m., deputies from the Howard County Sheriff’s Department and officers from BSPD responded to a call at Crossroads bar on S. Hwy. 87, where a man had displayed a firearm, according to the release.

The suspect was reported to have left the Crossroads bar in a dark blue car and then was pursued by officers after refusing to stop his vehicle, which ultimately crashed into a fence in the 1300 block of Barnes near S. Monticello in Big Spring.

During the incident, a Big Spring officer was shot after ordering the driver out of the car. The officer returned fire before taking cover but the suspect then escaped on foot.  

Later, at around 8:30 a.m., BSPD observed Montanez running in the south alley from the 2100 block of Alabama and into a storage shed behind a residence. 

A perimeter was established by all agencies involved with the assistance of the Midland Police Department SWAT team. 

Montanez peacefully surrendered at approximately 9:22 a.m. and was found to have suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds from the altercation with the original officer. He was immediately given medical attention by Big Spring Fire/EMS.

Montanez is being transported to an outside hospital as a precautionary measure. Upon his release, he will be transported back to Big Spring and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer causing serious bodily injury.

At this time, the officer involved in the shooting, who was airlifted to UMC Lubbock, has been reported to be in stable condition, according to the press release. 

The Texas Rangers Division is aiding in the investigation of the shooting.
