ODESSA, Texas — The Ector County Independent School District has given an update on the incident that occurred Monday morning when a female student was shot in the parking lot of Odessa High School. A school official said ECISD police arrested five ECISD students in connection to the shooting.
The shooting happened on the west side of the campus around 9:45 a.m. Monday. OHS was immediately put under lockdown and then multiple law enforcement agencies arrived to the scene.
Officers administered aid to the student and started to gather evidence and statements.
Multiple witnesses told officers that a parking lot fight prompted the student being shot in the foot.
In a press conference around 11 a.m., district officials said that one suspect was in custody and all other students and staff were safe.
At 11:27 a.m., ECISD told NewsWest 9 that police secured the campus and released students.
As of Monday afternoon, ECISD Police have arrested five ECISD students, including one 15-year-old male OHS student, in connection to the shooting.
The 15-year-old has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of unlawful carry of weapons and one count of possession of a controlled substance.
The other four students are being questioned by police and are considered either victims or witnesses, according to ECISD.
“I’m very angry at the behavior of these students,” said Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri in a Monday afternoon press conference. “Violence does not have a place on our campuses or in our community. We must work together with parents to equip our students to solve problems in other ways than using violence.”
NewsWest 9 will update this story once more information has been provided.
