MIDLAND, Texas — According to the City of Midland, a 10-year-old student who was hit by a truck on Thursday passed away after being in the hospital in critical condition.
The City of Midland told NewsWest 9 that a car accident involving a Midland ISD student happened on Thursday.
According to the Midland Police Department, at 4:35 p.m., MPD was called to the 1900 block of South Lamesa Rd.
When officers arrived, they discovered a black truck struck a 10-year-old child who was attempting to cross the road after leaving IDEA Travis.
The City of Midland said officers determined the accident to be a hit-and-run.
A little while after, an officer located and detained the suspected driver of the hit-and-run, Rogelio Ortiz. As of Friday, his charge is accident involving death.
The IDEA Travis student was air-lifted to Lubbock. As of Friday morning, the student has passed away.
IDEA Travis and MISD released a statement regarding the passing Friday morning:
"IDEA and Midland Independent School District are mourning the loss of one of our IDEA Travis students after a tragic incident near our school yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and loved ones. Counselors will be providing mental health support for students and staff on campus. As the safety of our students continues to be our number one priority, we are urging drivers to exercise caution when pedestrians are present to prevent tragedies."
IDEA Travis Academy Principal Iliana Bermea also released a statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with our student's family. This has been very difficult news for the entire Travis family to receive. We are working to process this tragedy and provide support to all who need it."
The investigation is ongoing.
