Two arrested by Lea County deputies after 14-month-old baby suffers severe bodily injuries

21-year-old Brianna Hernandez and 23-year-old Dominic Jesus Martinez were arrested by the Lea County Sheriff's Office for two child abuse charges.

LEA COUNTY, N.M. — A couple from Hobbs, NM., 21-year-old Brianna Hernandez and 23-year-old Dominic Jesus Martinez, have been arrested by the Lea County Sheriff's Office after a 14-month-old baby suffers multiple bodily injuries on Jan. 3, a press release obtained by NewsWest 9 says.

According to a media release, on Jan. 3 at 11:30 a.m., LCSO deputies were called to the Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital in reference to a child abuse situation.

When officers arrived to the hospital, the 14-month-old infant was brought in by the mother, Hernandez, with broken bones, bruising and brain trauma.

Since the baby's injuries were so severe, they had to be airlifted to a hospital in Texas.

Once LCSO conducted an investigation that included "several" interviews, it was learned that the injuries to the baby were reportedly caused by Hernandez and Martinez.

Hernandez and Martinez were both charged with abandonment or abuse of a child causing great bodily harm and abandonment or abuse of a child. Both were booked into the Lea County Detention Center.

LCSO says in a media release that the investigation is still on-going and additional charges may follow.
