ODESSA, Texas — One-year-old twins passed away after a drowning incident in the 800 block of Humble in Odessa Wednesday, according to the City of Odessa.

The Odessa Police Department (OPD) and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to the scene and found two one-year-old twins suffering from injuries related to drowning.

Medics took the babies to Medical Center Hospital, however, despite the efforts of first responders and emergency medical staff, both babies died.

During OPD's investigation, detectives identified 34-year-old Joan Reyes de Jesus as the person taking care of the children at the time. De Jesus was hired by the mother of the twins to take care of them.

OPD found out through an investigation that De Jesus placed the babies "into the bathtub, turned on the water and left the bathroom to watch the television."

According to OPD, De Jesus then fell asleep for an unknown amount of time.

Evidence received by OPD showed that approximately 30 minutes (or more) passed by before the family realized the twins were in the bathtub.

At press time, De Jesus has been charged with injury to a child, a first degree felony.
