ECISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri discusses the district's budget issues

Dr. Scott Muri with ECISD hopes the district won't have to make any cuts in 2024. This hope is due to no money coming from state legislators or local property taxes.

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — NewsWest 9 told you about how state legislators failed to pass the school voucher bill in Austin during the 4th special session.

Leaders didn't agree on public education funding for 2023, which affects school districts across the state, including ECISD.

A majority of the budget comes from the state legislators and local property taxes.

Since ECISD isn't getting money, the hope is the district won't have to make any cuts next year.

"As we begin to make difficult decisions the guidance we received from our board is to try to keep any cuts as far away from students as possible. One thing we know is the federal government funds, COVID-19 money if you will," Dr. Muri said. "We had a healthy amount of money to invest in our students and staff that'll come to an end. We focus cuts far away from students as possible because we know that'll affect kids. Its only happening because the state has not released funding to public schools."

This is a $24 million budget deficit if the state doesn't come through.

Dr. Muri is urging the community to reach out with state officials.
