ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — The Ector County Independent School District Board of Trustees gave the green light Monday to expand the attendance zone for one elementary school campus.
Starting next school year, students that attend Travis Magnet Elementary will be moved to Zavala Elementary.
ECISD plans to re-purpose the Travis Magnet Elementary campus, but as of right now, there's no clear plan on what that campus will be.
ECISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri told NewsWest 9 that some of the avenues they're looking into is all thanks to community input.
"We actually want to engage a variety of folks here," Dr. Muri said. "We've listened to some public already and the biggest thing we heard is child care. Our community has a child care. We live in a childcare desert right now, there just aren't enough options. We've heard from our own chamber of commerce, the workforce commission that their is a significant need in our community. That is one of the opportunities to look at, but their are a variety of things. Certainly community input and conversations are important."
Dr. Muri is also giving parents another option if students choose not to attend Zavala Elementary.
"Certainly they can attend Zavala Elementary again, or those kids will have an opportunity to participate in the magnet lottery, which is occurring right now for those students," Dr. Muri said.
By re-purposing Travis Magnet Elementary, the school district is saving over $550,000.
ECISD told NewsWest 9 that they will make a decision on what becomes of Travis Magnet Elementary at a later time.
