'I think it's the future of our community' | MISD continues to make progress on the 2023 school bond

Topics included three new schools that will be added to the district, one elementary school that just recently broke ground and two new high schools.

MIDLAND, Texas — The Midland ISD board held a meeting on Tuesday, June 25, to discuss a few updates on projects from the 2023 school bond that passed in November of 2023

One of the items on the agenda was the new elementary school that broke ground in north Midland. Board members mentioned that equipment has been purchased and order for the new school. That means it may arrive up to six months in advance, ensuring that the school will open on time.

Midland ISD is also looking into Geotechnical services at the sites for two new high schools, Midland Freshman and Goddard Junior High. The district plans to confirm the budget for these schools by the end of August.

One final topic from the bond update were the purchase orders for packages 6 (School Safety & Security) and 7 (Midland Freshman Site Improvements), issued the week of June 10.

With all the progress discussed at the board meeting, MISD Board President Tommy Bishop explained that there is still a lot more work to be done.

"There's a lot of preparation in the meantime of getting ready to build any infrastructure," he said. "There has to be some preparation and getting ideas and questions being asked with us from the community and from the district employees and being able to show what's going to be put out there for the community."

However, that does not discount his happiness for what the bond will mean for education across Midland.

"I think it's the future of the community," Bishop said. "The future of our students and our children and our staff, giving them a different outlook of our facilities and then upgrades giving them a more comfortable place to be able to learn as well as our teachers been able to teach."

Next steps in the bond process include the approval of the negotiations for the contract for the new high schools, approval of the construction inspection and more.
