MIDLAND, Texas — January marks the beginning of many New Year's resolutions for people all over the globe.
Different people have different resolutions, but the same resolution gets recycled by many people.
That resolution? Getting back into the gym.
This, naturally, results in local gyms getting packed with people trying to achieve their goals. Local gyms, however, are prepared for this influx of people and are ready to help these rookies.
“I think everybody knows that and every gym knows that, they're prepared for the new year. There are going to be a lot of people coming in and not really knowing what they want to do as like a big goal. They want to see a difference," Kylie Brown, a coach with HIIT4FIT in Midland, said. "We help them find like tangible small goals that are going to last throughout the year.”
But what is it that people are looking to gain at the gym? It varies from person to person.
“I think a common goal is that people obviously want to see a difference in themselves for a year, so a lot of times it's losing weight," Brown said. "So coming into the gym, a lot of people focus on losing weight and what they look like, but we want them to focus on what they can do and what their body can do.”
There is more to gym going then just lifting weights or riding the bike. Workouts and exercises are designed around working in a group, building a sense of community and comradery.
A good workout, alone or in a group, can also bring a sense of achievement. It isn't just for the gym-goer, because the fitness instructors get to see you improve at the gym.
“I think it's awesome because we can be a part of that learning experience, like if somebody's never done like a snatch or a clean before, I'm right along with them in the journey of them getting better and better and better," Maddie Kalt, another coach with HIIT4FIIT, said. "I can see like from the beginning to where they are you know, maybe in six months from now.”
