Midland ISD Air Force JROTC cadets honor fallen 9/11 victims

The cadets were at Centennial Park to do the ceremony. The Midland High School choir sang the National Anthem.

MIDLAND, Texas — Midland Independent School District Air Force JROTC cadets commemorated 9/11 on Wednesday.

The cadets were at Centennial Park to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks and were joined by community members and first responders.

The formal ceremony included the presentation of colors, a performance of the National Anthem by the Midland High School choir and a flag display by the Patriot Guard Riders that was followed by a moment of silence.

Students told NewsWest 9 that even though they weren't born when 9/11 happened, they still found ways to remember.

"I heard about 9/11 when I was little. I'm homeschooled so my Dad's a fireman, Jesse Martinez, we talk about it every year. We watch documentaries," said Mackenzie Martinez, second lieutenant. "I do stair climb with MFD we honor it through that.  For me it's important as an American to remember and respect our country some people don't have respect for America and I think it's important for us to remember what our country has done for us and what we've been through as a country."

The JROTC is a U.S. Federal Program that prepares high school students for leadership roles and is aimed to educate people about their rights and responsibilities.
