MIDLAND, Texas — The Texas Ranger Division is investigating the shooting of an armed suspect early Monday morning at the intersection of Lamesa Road and Illinois Avenue.

A man was shot in the leg by a Midland Police Department (MPD) officer for refusing to disarm himself of a weapon.

According to reports, officers responded to a call around 2 a.m. of an individual walking around with a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers were met "by a shirtless male suspect" in the middle of the roadway holding a gun.

“Despite repeated commands from law enforcement to drop the weapon, the suspect refused to comply. In response to the escalating situation and the potential threat to public safety, an officer discharged a single round, striking the suspect in the leg," MPD said.

The suspect was medically treated for his wound then taken into custody by MPD.
